DFB certification for synthetic turf pitches

Find out how synthetic turf pitches are certified for DFB match operations.

Synthetic turf – DFB certification

It is common practice within the sports sector for the respective sports associations to establish their own guidelines and requirements for competition venues. This is to ensure fair competition and to safeguard the well-being of athletes and protect them from injury. Such requirements are also in place for sports facilities used for football matches, and these are invariably stipulated by the organiser of the respective competition. At national level, these are the German Football League (DFL) and the German Football Association (DFB). As synthetic turf pitches are not permitted as playing surfaces in DFL competitions (1st-2nd division in the men's league), there is only a set of rules for the certification of synthetic turf pitches for matches at DFB level, with the exception of the men's 3rd division. This is mandatory for and applies exclusively to sports facilities in the German Women’s Bundesliga and 2nd Women’s Bundesliga as well as the U19 and U17 youth leagues. For other competitions, the guidelines of the respective organising association apply.

ISP GmbH – Institut für Sportstättenprüfung is authorised to certify your synthetic turf pitch as a suitable playing surface for use in DFB matches. We have all the necessary test and measuring equipment at our disposal and can set it up for implementation on any pitch. Our team of trained specialists conducts the tests as field tests on site, directly on the playing surface. The validity of a certificate is three years, after which re-certification is required. During this period, your synthetic turf pitch can be used as a competition venue.

Requirements for DFB certification

The DFB has established nine performance requirements for synthetic turf pitches, which are outlined in a table in the handbook – divided into categories A and B, with category A incorporating more requirements than category B. The locations on the pitch where individual tests must be conducted (field test positions) are clearly defined, as are the conditions that must prevail on site (climate, temperature, etc.).

The performance requirements largely correspond to the known tests from the standardisation of synthetic turf systems: these include rotational resistance, ball roll, vertical deformation and shock absorption. In addition, the results of the visual inspection and the examination of the height of the infill of the synthetic turf surface as well as the free pile height (how much do the synthetic turf blades protrude above the infill?) must be taken into account. For category A, there are also requirements regarding vertical ball behaviour and the evenness of the pitch (no discernible irregularities or bumps). Certification can only be granted if the test results match the values delineated in the table in the handbook for the respective category.

The handbook also includes information on the proper maintenance of the synthetic turf pitch to ensure optimum playability and safety. Although compliance with the maintenance guidelines is not subject to direct scrutiny, non-compliance will inevitably have a negative impact on future test results. To obtain long-term certification, pitch operators are advised to adhere to the maintenance instructions, which provide for regular inspections and deep cleaning of the surface, among other things.

Upon conclusion of the DFB certification testing process, a comprehensive test report is produced, detailing all the test results. If all requirements are met, the relevant competitions can be held on your pitch over the next three years.

Which category for which division?

The requirements for certification by the DFB are delineated in the 'Handbook for the certification of synthetic turf surfaces for use in DFB matches'. It is based on various standards and FIFA guidelines. In addition to performance testing, it also provides for a check of the proper design and layout of the pitch (dimensions, markings, etc.) and a visual inspection for any damage to the surface, irrigation or sports equipment (goals).

The handbook also enumerates two categories, designated A and B, which encompass specific performance criteria for synthetic turf pitches, with category A incorporating more stringent performance requirements and therefore being the more demanding category.

In the German Women's Bundesliga, a synthetic turf pitch that serves as the main venue must meet the requirements of category A in addition to the FIFA ‘Quality’ certificate; for a synthetic turf pitch that is designated as an alternative venue (if the main venue is a natural grass pitch), category B is deemed sufficient.

For the 2nd Women's Bundesliga, it is generally sufficient for synthetic turf pitches to meet the requirements of category B, which is also the prerequisite for all national matches in the women's leagues and women's youth leagues. In the U19 and U17 youth leagues, a synthetic turf pitch that meets the requirements of category B is only permitted as an alternative venue, while the main venue must still be a natural grass pitch.

Teams that qualify for the main round of the youth leagues from the second-highest divisions may also use a synthetic turf pitch without certification for the duration of the main round.

The utilisation of synthetic turf pitches is also permitted for select DFB football competitions at national level, including the women's leagues and the men's youth leagues. In order for the competitions to take place there, the pitches must meet the requirements of a special certification by the DFB.

ISP GmbH – Institut für Sportstättenprüfung is authorised to test your synthetic turf pitch for suitability and provide you with a corresponding certificate if it meets the requirements.
