Assessment of sports halls

Checking safety and compliance with standards

Professional assessment and determination of refurbishment requirements

Sports halls and gymnasiums are actually used every day in Germany, with very few exceptions. There is a wide variety of sporting activities on offer, including school and club sports, sporting competitions and informal sports. Nonetheless, as a sports hall ages, the likelihood of structural elements and fixtures requiring repair or refurbishment will increase. This applies to sports hall flooring, impact walls and other fixtures. However, many operators of such sports facilities find it difficult to ascertain whether the sports hall and its elements still meet the requirements of DIN standards and sports association-specific competition specifications or whether it may need to be repaired or modernised in the near future.

Why is the evaluation of your sports hall important?

An assessment of your sports hall, as offered by ISP GmbH – Institut für Sportstättenprüfung, is the ideal solution for you as the operator to accurately assess the condition of your sports hall or gymnasium. Our company's specialists will assess the actual condition of your existing sports hall, including the flooring, walls, ceiling and installation elements, on site. Using the results of this assessment, they will be able to tell you whether there is a need for refurbishment or whether the sports hall or gymnasium still meets all the requirements of the applicable standards so that you can continue to use it without any problems. Or whether there is only minor damage that is easy to repair without necessitating a comprehensive refurbishment. If a refurbishment is required, we will discuss with you, as the operator, the next steps. It goes without saying that all inspections of existing facilities are carried out in accordance with the prevailing standards and regulations. Having your existing sports facility assessed will give you planning certainty, help you to save costs and ensure that athletes can practise their sport on your sports hall safely.

What does the inspection of an existing sports hall involve?

The first step is a thorough visual inspection, during which any obvious defects in the structural elements and fixtures can be identified and documented promptly. Following this, the sports hall flooring is subjected to specific testing in order to ascertain its conformity with the requirements of the DIN 18032-2 and DIN EN 14904 standards. The tests stipulated in the respective standard are then conducted on the existing sports hall, followed by an analysis of the results. This is done using the same test equipment as is used in a laboratory. The test procedures are clearly specified in the standard. It can then be determined whether the sports hall flooring still complies with the technical and safety requirements of the standard. The walls and installation elements are then also analysed in accordance with DIN 18032-3 and DIN 18032-7, as are the ceilings including the installation elements in accordance with DIN 18032-3. This provides a comprehensive picture of the condition of your sports hall, which can be used to determine the need for refurbishment in terms of safety and technical usability.
