FIBA Certification
Regardless of existing standards and legal regulations, many sports associations also have their own additional requirements for equipment, facilities and the design of sports facilities for their respective sports. Some of them only apply to competitions at the international and highest league level, but others apply to the entire sports operation. The latter is the case in basketball. The world federation FIBA has created a comprehensive set of rules that define the requirements and test methods for Basketball sports equipment and the sports facilities. There are only two levels within these rules – one for FIBA competitions, national professional leagues and major international competitions at club and national team level (level 1), and one for all others (level 2). Of course, the requirements at level 1 are much more demanding, but even at level 2, there are clear specifications and requirements for the equipment and the sports hall itself, which must be met in almost all areas. The rules are set out in the ‘FIBA Approval Programme for Basketball Equipment - Handbook of Test Methods and Requirements’. A separate chapter, ‘Wooden & Synthetic Flooring’, deals with sports hall flooring.
ISP GmbH – the Institut für Sportstättenprüfung is a FIBA-certified testing laboratory for sports hall flooring suitable for basketball in accordance with FIBA guidelines. We can test whether your sports flooring meets FIBA requirements for levels 1 or 2, either in our certified testing laboratory or on-site at your sports hall.
Which floorings are suitable for basketball?
In the USA, professional basketball has always been played on wooden floors, and almost all teams even use the same type of wood, which is maple. Only one team (the Boston Celtics) plays on an oak floor. This is why a sports flooring with a wooden surface is one of only two surfaces that FIBA regulations allow for level 1. The other permitted surface is a fairly new development, namely glass. Glass flooring (safety glass with a laminated surface) has the advantage that it allows LED animations for better entertainment, but is also good for training purposes. While the National Basketball Association (NBA) is only slowly approaching this topic, FC Bayern in Germany is already using such flooring in accordance with FIBA guidelines. Other synthetic surfaces, such as PVC, polyurethane, etc., are only permitted for level 2.

The International Basketball Federation has a wide range of requirements

The FIBA rules are very specific. They even contain fundamental specifications for the testing of sports flooring by describing individual test procedures in detail. All sports flooring must achieve the specified values in the areas of force reduction, vertical deformation, vertical ball behaviour, wear resistance, gloss level (level 1 only), linear shoe/surface friction and rolling resistance during testing.
In the case of sports flooring for level 2, a distinction is also made between point-elastic, area-elastic, combined-elastic and mixed-elastic sports floors. The specifications and test devices sometimes differ significantly from the requirements of standard DIN 18032-2, although the FIBA specifications often allow greater leeway and do not contradict the standard itself. However, because there are specific additional requirements, compliance with a DIN standard does not automatically mean that the FIBA regulations have been met. Therefore, a FIBA-certified flooring is always required for basketball.
