Refurbishment report for safety surfacing on playgrounds

On playgrounds, it is also necessary to regularly renovate and/or replace the safety surfacing. This becomes necessary as soon as the old safety surfacing no longer meets the requirements of the relevant standard or when play equipment is to be replaced and therefore a new surface is needed. In the latter case, it is of course of interest to the playground operator to what extent parts of the old safety system can be retained. If, on the other hand, the playground does not need to be renovated, it is difficult for many operators to recognise if and when replacement of the safety surfacing becomes necessary. Moreover, there may also be plans to change the type of safety surfacing. The question then arises as to which safety surfacing is suitable for the existing playground. This question also arises in the case of complete renovations. Which safety surfacing is suitable for my playground? And what about reusing parts of the old safety surfacing in the interests of sustainability? Is it only necessary to repair or replace the surface or do the underlying layers need to be repaired or replaced as well? In addition, there is also the question of whether the drainage still works.

To ensure that you, as the operator of a playground, can meet all these requirements, a renovation report, as offered by ISP GmbH - Institut für Sportstättenprüfung, is the appropriate solution. In this process, the experts from our company will examine the current status of your existing safety surfacing system, including the base layer and substructure, on site. Based on the results, ISP’s experts will be able to determine the need for renovation and the options for further action, which they will discuss with you as the operator. All inspections are, of course, carried out in accordance with the requirements of the currently valid standards DIN EN 1176 and DIN EN 1177. A renovation report can thus provide you with planning security, save costs and ensure a long service life for the renovated safety surfacing in the playground. Moreover, it can be determined whether a renovation is necessary at all at present.

Inspection of the existing surface - what is the condition below the safety surfacing?

What does the renovation report include? Among others, a comprehensive inspection of the existing surface. When replacing the safety surfacing, the underlying drainage layer can be retained, if it is still in good condition.

Therefore, the condition of the layer below the safety surfacing must be checked. Is there any damage? Is drainage still guaranteed? Is it possible to install a new safety surfacing on it that meets the standards? Has the surface changed over time? All these questions can be answered by thoroughly testing the existing surface.

In this case playground operators do not need to worry that the inspection will jeopardise the use of the area until its completion. The inspection is carried out without affecting the use of the playground (unless serious damage is discovered that would endanger safety).

Renovation recommendation - professional expertise for the upcoming planning

The renovation report contains not only the results of the on-site inspections but also a renovation recommendation. This recommendation is based on the condition of the safety surfacing and defines the necessary and recommended modernisation steps. Such a recommendation goes well beyond the analysis of the current condition.

The experts at ISP, who carry out the tests, can also predict how the remaining elements of the playground surface will develop in the years to come, before the next renovation.

Problems that could require additional premature renovation can be identified at an early stage and possibly be eliminated during the upcoming modernisation. Current developments in legal regulations (keyword microplastics) or new developments on the market can also be included in the assessment.

In addition, the report will tell playground operators what types of safety surfacing are possible and recommended for their playground. This means that you will not only receive a simple report, but also expert advice on how to modernise your playground in a sustainable and appropriate way.
