In accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, it is mandatory for every testing laboratory to participate in round-robin tests on a regular basis. These tests, also referred to as laboratory proficiency testing, are used to compare the measurement procedures and the organisation, performance and evaluation of tests by individual testing laboratories. This benefits both the general public and the laboratories themselves by ensuring quality assurance.

In a round-robin test, multiple testing laboratories are provided with an identical test sample. The analysis and testing of the product in question is conducted on the sample in accordance with the prevailing standards.
The results are then evaluated in an interlaboratory comparison. If the results are all in a similar range, it can be assumed that all of the laboratories involved were able to carry out the test to a satisfactory standard and in accordance with the required quality parameters.
Should there be a discrepancy between the results obtained by individual laboratories, the underlying cause must be ascertained. To do this, the test procedure and test equipment of the laboratory in question must be examined and checked and, if necessary, the test must be repeated on another sample.
If the results of individual tests vary significantly overall, a comprehensive investigation into the underlying causes is imperative. It may even be the case that the general test procedure is no longer appropriate for the product in question.
