Standards for sports hall flooring: safety and requirements

Safety is particularly important in gyms and sports halls. This applies not only to school sports but also to club and competitive sports. The aim is to prevent serious injuries and to ensure that sports can be practised in a safe and sports-appropriate manner. In this context, the sports flooring plays a very important role. It is the surface on which all sports are played and an essential factor in ensuring safety in the event of a fall – even if additional movable sports mats are used.

The possible system structure and materials used for sports flooring are very different. There are point-elastic, area-elastic, combined-elastic and mixed-elastic sports floorings. Depending on the model, the surface may be made of PVC, polyurethane, linoleum, wood (parquet), glass or rubber. Not every structure and all surface coverings are well suited for every type of sports. The protective properties are also very different. Nevertheless, all sports floorings must meet certain standards and technical specifications. In Germany, the relevant standards are DIN 18032-1, 18032-2 and DIN EN 14904.

The standards are developed in a special working committee with a panel of experts and adopted by consensus. The whole process is overseen by the European Committee for Standardisation or the German Institute for Standardisation, and the standards are then published as reference works by a specialist publisher for a fee. A standard is reviewed every five years to ascertain whether any amendments are required.

Which standards apply to sports hall flooring?

Standard DIN 18032-1 ‘Sports halls – halls and rooms for sports and multi-purpose use – Part 1: principles for planning’ provides general planning principles for gyms and sports halls as well as indoor sports flooring. It focuses on the basic equipment of such halls. The relevant additional standards are listed for all individual components. Specifications for changing rooms, spectator areas, sanitary facilities, storage and equipment rooms, lighting, heating and ventilation are described in a compact and general way. Standard DIN 18032-1 covers all areas of sports hall construction and provides an overview of the factors to be taken into account for each individual area and where further specifications can be found. It offers a brief summary of the general requirements for floorings for special purposes.

Standard DIN 18032-2 ‘Sports halls – Halls and rooms for sports and multi-purpose use – Part 2: Sports flooring, requirements, testing’ specifically addresses the sports flooring in such halls. The requirements for sports hall flooring are defined in the same way as those for the four different types of flooring. Each of the sports flooring types must also meet different specifications in the relevant requirement areas (e.g. sliding ability, force reduction). In addition, there are also regulations on environmental compatibility and requirements for installations in the floor or near the floor (e.g. fastening sleeves, underfloor heating or playing field markings). A large part of the standard is dedicated to explaining the individual tests for sports flooring. These are defined and explained in detail with regard to the procedure, test set-up and implementation. Since there are also differences here with regard to the four types of sports flooring, this section is particularly extensive.

In fact, standard DIN EN 14904, ‘Sports floors – Multi-purpose sports hall flooring – Requirements’ is actually the European version of standard DIN 18032-2. As a European standard, it cannot be contradicted by the German standard. ‘Actually’ is used because the European standard is quite concise and superficial compared to the German one. Critics accuse the standard of not providing any clear information. Since no new finally revised version has been published since 2006, the much more detailed standard DIN 18032-2 is usually consulted in this country for sports hall flooring.

Standard DIN EN 14904 specifies fundamental requirements for operational safety (protective properties), technical properties (for practising sports) and defines different types of testing (no description of individual tests).
