Safety requirements for sports hall walls

Safety is of particular importance in gyms and sports halls. This applies not only to school sports but also to club and competitive sports. Serious injuries must be avoided and safe and appropriate sports facilities must be provided. The walls of the sports hall are very important in this regard. Since they often come in contact with sports equipment and athletes during sports activities, they must meet certain requirements and standards.

The walls of a sports hall must be at least 2.70 m high and smooth. Any unevenness and splintering must be removed. In addition, they must not be rough, as this could lead to skin injuries during sports activities. The walls are usually covered with Impact protection surface systems for walls made of wood, plastic, glass or fabric. Above all, this is important to prevent injuries, but also to avoid material damage and provide noise protection. Walls and Impact protection surface systems meet various normative requirements and standardised specifications. In Germany, the relevant standards are DIN 18032-1, 18032-3 and DIN 18032-7.

The standards are developed in a special working committee with a panel of experts and adopted by consensus. The whole process is overseen by the European Committee for Standardisation or the German Institute for Standardisation, and the standards are then published as reference works by a specialist publisher for a fee. A standard is reviewed every five years to ascertain whether any amendments are required.

Which standards apply to the walls of sports halls?

Standard DIN 18032-1 ‘Sports halls – halls and rooms for sports and multi-purpose use – Part 1: principles for planning’ provides general planning principles for gyms and sports halls as well as indoor sports flooring. It focuses on the basic equipment of such halls. The relevant additional standards are listed for all individual components. Specifications for changing rooms, spectator areas, sanitary facilities, storage and equipment rooms, lighting, heating and ventilation are described in a compact and general way. Standard DIN 18032-1 covers all areas of sports hall construction and provides an overview of the factors to be taken into account for each individual area and where further specifications can be found. It offers a brief summary of the general requirements for wallsand installation elements (doors and gates).

Standard DIN 18032-3 ‘Halls and rooms for sports and multi-purpose use – Part 3: Testing for ball-throwing safety’ deals with the protective properties of sports hall equipment against the consequences and damage caused by ball throws (including shots in hockey/football, etc.). The standard focuses on the structure and implementation of the test. The relevant terms are defined; the test procedure and the documentation are described in detail. The test can therefore also be applied to and for wall elements.

DIN 18032-7 ‘Halls and rooms for sports and multi-purpose use – Part 7: Impact protection surface systems for walls; requirements, testing’ specifically addresses impact protection coverings on the walls of sports halls.

Here, too, the focus is on testing the technical and protective functional properties. The types of tests and how they are carried out are described in detail.

A distinction is made here between point-elastic (plastic/textile) and area-elastic (wood/glass) Impact protection surface systems for walls. The tests can be carried out both in the laboratory and in situ (on site).
