Safety against ball throwing- tests
The safety of sports halls is paramount - especially when it comes to safety against ball throwing. Tests in accordance with DIN 18032-3 ensure that wall, ceiling and installation elements remain stable and safe even in the event of strong ball impacts. Find out how these tests are carried out and which categories are tested. Discover the expertise of ISP GmbH and have your elements certified!
Test methods for wall, ceiling and installation elements
Standard DIN 18032-3 for safety against ball throwing in sports halls only specifies one type of test, which differs in the way it is carried out depending on whether the product to be tested is a wall, ceiling or installation element. Wall elements are tested in categories W1-W3, ceiling elements in categories D1 or D2 (D = German abbreviation).
Installation elements are categorised as either wall or ceiling elements depending on where they are installed, and then tested accordingly. Only for luminaires is there an additional standard, namely DIN 57710-13, which must also be met. The tests, which are carried out in a test laboratory, then provide information on whether the wall, ceiling or installation element is safe against ball throwing. The safety against ball throwing test is referred to as a suitability test and is offered by ISP GmbH – the Institut für Sportstättenprüfung.
Suitability tests are carried out in a certified laboratory. Here, a wall, ceiling or installation element from a manufacturer is tested to determine whether it fulfils the requirements of the standard. It is installed in exactly the same way as it would be installed in a sports hall. This is usually done before a product is launched on the market. The tests provide manufacturers with the certainty that their products meet the requirements of the relevant standards.
However, it is also possible to test pre-installed wall or ceiling elements directly on site in your sports hall.
ISP GmbH offers suitability tests for your products. As an accredited testing company with our own testing laboratory, we at ISP GmbH perform the tests in accordance with standard DIN 18032-3. We also carry out tests on elements that have already been installed in your gym or sports hall. You will then receive a comprehensive test report on the tests carried out on your wall, ceiling and installation elements.

What do the individual tests consist of?
All tests are carried out with a ball-shooting machine. Depending on whether it is a wall, ceiling or installation element, different types of balls (handball, hockey ball) are used. For wall and ceiling elements, different categories (W1-W3, D1 or D2; D=German abbreviation) are considered, each with different test procedures. For each category, the test procedures are clearly defined.
Installation elements are tested either as wall or ceiling elements. Depending on the category (W1-W3, D1-D2) the standard specifies an impact speed at which the ball must hit the element. The higher the number in the category, the greater the impact speed used in the test. The type of ball is also defined.
Based on the distance between the element and the ball-shooting device (4.0 m with a tolerance of half a metre for wall elements, at least 1.5 m for ceiling elements), it is possible to calculate in advance the shooting speed of the ball.
There is a clearly defined number of shots and different shooting angles, always three per test. The shots hit different parts of the element. The result of each test is always evaluated in the same way: if the element is unchanged afterwards or if it has only slight damage (slight dents) without affecting the fastening or its function, the test will be successfully passed. However, if it becomes apparent during the test that part of the relevant element has changed slightly, then the element must be shot at again to make sure that no serious damage occurs.
A kink or a chip in the paintwork would, however, be a serious change that indicates that the test for safety against ball throwing has not been passed. Of course, this also applies in cases where the element itself or parts of it are loose or if the element no longer functions properly after the test. The test for safety against ball throwing described above is important to ensure the safety and functionality of a sports hall.
