Fall protection surfaces

Surfacing in playgrounds and leisure facilities must fulfil technical requirements related to safety. The shock absorption of the surfacing is tested with an HIC test instrument according to EN 1177 and ASTM F 1292. The aim of the test is to determine the critical fall height for the test specimen.

Each fall protection surface has individual properties, minimum installation thickness, cleaning and maintenance requirements. One of the most important feature is shock absorption, which reduces the impact energy caused by the fall of a play equipment. This property can deteriorate through ageing and use.
